With the increasing demand for carbon fiber dyeing and the development of technology, some new dyes have emerged for carbon fiber dyeing. These new dyes have advantages in improving dyeing effects and environmental protection:
Nano-composite dyes
- Principle: Nano-composite dyes combine nanoparticles with special functions with traditional dyes. Nanoparticles can be metal nanoparticles (such as silver, gold nanoparticles), metal oxide nanoparticles (such as titanium dioxide, zinc oxide nanoparticles), etc. These nanoparticles are compounded with dye molecules through physical or chemical effects. During the dyeing process, nano-composite dyes can be better adsorbed on the surface of carbon fibers, and nanoparticles can be filled into the microscopic pores of carbon fibers to enhance the interaction between dyes and fibers.
- Advantages: Nano-composite dyes can significantly improve the dyeing depth and color fastness of carbon fibers. Due to the small size effect and surface effect of nanoparticles, they can improve the dispersibility of dyes and make the dyes more evenly distributed on the fibers, thereby improving the brightness and uniformity of dyeing. In addition, some nanoparticles have special functions, such as titanium dioxide nanoparticles have photocatalytic self-cleaning functions. Carbon fibers dyed with composite dyes containing such nanoparticles may have additional properties such as self-cleaning while having good color.
Functional ionic liquid dyes
- Principle: Ionic liquids are salts that are liquid at room temperature or near room temperature and have unique physical and chemical properties, such as low vapor pressure, good solubility and thermal stability. Functional ionic liquid dyes are groups with dyeing functions introduced into the structure of ionic liquids. In carbon fiber dyeing, the cationic or anionic part of the ionic liquid can interact with the groups on the surface of the carbon fiber to achieve the adsorption and fixation of the dye.
- Advantages: This type of dye has good solubility and processability, and can dye carbon fibers under milder conditions. The low volatility of ionic liquids makes the dyeing process more environmentally friendly and reduces the emission of harmful gases. Moreover, functional ionic liquid dyes can adjust the affinity and dyeing properties of ionic liquids to carbon fibers by designing their structure, so as to achieve dyeing with different color and performance requirements.
Natural polymer-based dyes
- Principle: Dyes developed based on natural polymer materials, such as chitosan, cellulose and other natural polymers. These natural polymers are chemically modified and chromophores are introduced to make them dyeable. For example, chitosan is grafted and modified with colored organic groups, and then used for carbon fiber dyeing. The natural polymer and carbon fiber can achieve dye attachment through hydrogen bonds, van der Waals forces and other interactions.
- Advantages: Natural polymer-based dyes have good biocompatibility and degradability, and meet environmental protection requirements. They are widely available and relatively low in cost. At the same time, these dyes can give carbon fibers some special properties, such as chitosan-based dyes may make carbon fibers have antibacterial properties, broadening the application field of carbon fibers.
