I. Basic composition and strength basis of carbon fiber
Carbon fiber is a special fiber composed of carbon element. It is made of artificial chemical fiber with high carbon content and non-melting during heat treatment, and is made by processes such as heat-stable oxidation treatment, carbonization treatment and graphitization. Its basic microstructure gives it excellent strength characteristics.
Carbon fiber fabric is usually woven from multiple bundles of carbon fibers. Each carbon fiber monofilament has a high strength-to-weight ratio. The diameter of a single carbon fiber filament is extremely small, which allows the carbon atoms inside to efficiently transfer stress when it is subjected to tension, so that it can withstand huge tension without breaking. According to relevant research, the tensile strength of carbon fiber can reach 3000-7000MPa, which is much higher than many traditional building materials and metal materials, such as steel, whose tensile strength is usually between 200-2000MPa.
II. Factors affecting the strength of carbon fiber fabric
(I) Manufacturing process
1. Raw material quality
- The raw materials used to make carbon fiber have an important influence on the strength of the final fabric. If the starting chemical fiber raw material is not pure enough and contains more impurities, defects may occur in the subsequent carbonization and graphitization process. For example, impurities may destroy the crystal structure inside the carbon fiber, causing uneven stress transfer, thereby reducing the overall strength of the fabric.
2. Weaving method
- Different weaving methods will make carbon fiber fabrics show different strength characteristics. Plain weave, twill weave and satin weave are common carbon fiber fabric weaving methods. Plain weave has a tight structure, good fabric stability, and a relatively uniform strength distribution in all directions; twill weave is relatively softer and can withstand a certain shear force, but the strength in some directions may be slightly lower than plain weave; satin weave has better surface smoothness and is suitable for some applications that require appearance and fluid dynamics, but its strength may be affected under complex stress conditions.
(II) Environmental factors
1. Temperature
- In high temperature environments, the strength of carbon fiber fabrics may change. Generally speaking, within a certain high temperature range, the strength of carbon fiber can remain relatively stable. However, when the temperature exceeds its critical value, the crystal structure inside the carbon fiber may change, such as the orderly arrangement of the crystals is disrupted, resulting in a decrease in the strength of the fiber. On the contrary, in a low temperature environment, the strength of the carbon fiber fabric may increase, but it may also become more brittle and easy to break when impacted.
2. Humidity
- Humidity also affects the strength of carbon fiber fabric. If the carbon fiber fabric is in a high humidity environment for a long time, water molecules may penetrate into the fiber or the gap between the fibers. This may cause corrosion of the fiber or weaken the bonding force between the fibers, thereby reducing the strength of the fabric.
III. Strength of carbon fiber fabric in different fields
(I) Aerospace field
1. Aircraft structural parts
- In aircraft manufacturing, carbon fiber fabrics are widely used to manufacture structural parts such as wings and fuselages. Since the aircraft has to bear huge aerodynamic loads, its own weight and various complex stresses caused by changes in flight posture during flight, the high strength characteristics of carbon fiber fabrics are fully reflected. For example, the Boeing 787 uses a large amount of carbon fiber composite materials. After using carbon fiber fabric in its wing structure, it can withstand various extreme stresses in flight while reducing weight, ensuring the safe flight of the aircraft.
2. Satellite components
- Satellites face harsh environments in space, such as drastic changes in temperature and impacts of micrometeorites. Carbon fiber fabric is used to manufacture the structural frame and some key components of satellites. Its high strength can resist the damage of these external forces. And because of the low density of carbon fiber, it helps to reduce the weight of satellites and reduce launch costs.
(II) Automobile Industry
1. Body frame
- In high-performance cars and some new energy vehicles, carbon fiber fabric is used to manufacture body frames. Compared with traditional steel bodies, carbon fiber body frames have a higher strength-to-weight ratio. When a car collides, the carbon fiber body frame can effectively absorb and disperse energy to protect the safety of passengers in the car. At the same time, the lighter body weight also helps to improve the acceleration performance, handling performance and fuel economy of the car.
2. Parts manufacturing
- Carbon fiber fabric is also used to manufacture some key parts of automobiles, such as drive shafts and engine hoods. The drive shaft needs to transmit huge torque under high-speed rotation. The drive shaft made of carbon fiber fabric can meet the strength requirements, reduce weight and reduce rotational inertia. The engine hood is made of carbon fiber fabric, which is not only strong enough, but also can play a role in heat insulation, while reducing the weight of the front end of the vehicle and improving the handling balance of the vehicle.
(III) Sports goods field
1. Bicycle frame
- In high-end bicycle manufacturing, carbon fiber frame is the first choice for many cycling enthusiasts. The frame made of carbon fiber fabric can withstand various stresses during riding, including the weight of the rider, the impact caused by road bumps, etc. Moreover, the carbon fiber frame can be designed according to different riding needs, and its strength and stiffness distribution can be adjusted to provide the best riding performance.
2. Golf clubs
- The shaft of the golf club uses carbon fiber fabric, which can make the shaft lighter and more flexible while ensuring strength. When the player swings, the shaft needs to withstand huge bending and torsion forces. The carbon fiber club can effectively transfer the player's power to the ball while maintaining the stability of the shaft, improving the accuracy and distance of the shot.
Carbon fiber fabrics have very high strength, and their strength is affected by many factors. In many fields, the high strength characteristics of carbon fiber fabrics have been fully utilized, and with the continuous development of manufacturing technology, the strength and performance of carbon fiber fabrics are still improving, and it is expected to play an important role in more fields.
