How can we tell the difference between carbon fiber cloth and aramid cloth?


Carbon fiber cloth and aramid cloth are two indispensable reinforcement materials in the reinforcement ring. For practitioners who have just entered the reinforcement circle, they feel that carbon fiber cloth and aramid fiber cloth are no different. They increase both the bearing capacity of the slab or beam and the tensile capacity of the beam and slab; strengthen the normal section of the column or increase the hoop restraint. But in fact, there are still some differences between the two in terms of performance and application. So, how to distinguish between carbon fiber cloth and aramid cloth?


Different tensile strength

Carbon fiber cloth is mainly woven from carbon fiber yarn, and its tensile strength is required to reach 3400MPa; while aramid cloth is woven from aramid fiber, and its tensile strength can only reach 2100MPa. Looking at mechanical properties alone, carbon fiber cloth is better than aramid cloth.


Different conductivity, different application fields

Aramid is not conductive, so it is obviously not suitable to use carbon fiber cloth in structures with many electrical equipment such as subways and industrial plants. In addition, when carbon fiber is used for reinforcement of concrete structures, it must be isolated from steel bars to prevent electrochemical corrosion. The use of aramid fibers is not limited by this condition. When reinforcing ordinary building structures, carbon fiber has obvious application advantages in terms of tensile strength and elastic modulus.


Two different ways of destruction


The failure mode after carbon fiber reinforcement is brittleness (small structural deformation, high elastic modulus of carbon cloth, low elongation), and no obvious signs. Therefore, as a structural design, a larger safety factor must be adopted; the elastic modulus of the aramid fabric is low and the elongation is large. Experiments show that after the damaged plain concrete members are reinforced with aramid fabric and then loaded, the failure process is still plastic.


Structural adhesives have different penetration capabilities


Aramid and resin are both organic materials, and the two are strongly combined; carbon fiber cloth is an inorganic material, and its air permeability is different from that of aramid, which requires multiple operations.


Having said that, carbon fiber cloth and aramid cloth are very different in tensile strength and elastic modulus. And carbon fiber cloth is conductive, aramid cloth is not conductive.
